ING (Gerunds) as the Subject of the Sentence

Many students think that the present participle ING is always a verb but it depends on the context. Before we explore gerunds as subjects, let’s briefly recap what a gerund is. A gerund is the -ing form of a verb and functions as a noun in a sentence.

For example, in the sentence “Swimming is my favorite hobby,” “swimming” is a gerund acting as the subject.

Using Gerunds as Subjects: The Structure When a gerund takes on the role of the subject in a sentence, it adds vibrancy and action to the overall expression. The structure is simple:

Gerund (Verb + -ing) as Subject + Verb + Complement

  • Example: Running is an excellent form of exercise.

*** La forma ING también llamado present participle o gerund se puede usar como SUJETO de la oración. Es decir, cuando el “verbo” es usado como un sustantivo en posición de sujeto lo vamos a poner en forma ING

Benefits of Using Gerunds as Subjects:

  1. Expressing Actions: Gerunds as subjects vividly convey actions, injecting life into your sentences.
  2. Variety in Sentence Structure: Incorporating gerunds allows you to diversify your sentence structures, making your writing or speaking more engaging.
  3. Emphasizing Activities: Gerunds put the focus on activities, highlighting the action itself rather than the doer.

Examples in Context:

  1. Learning is a lifelong journey.
    • In this sentence, “learning” serves as the subject, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the activity.
  2. Dancing requires both skill and passion.
    • Here, “dancing” is the subject, highlighting the skills and passion associated with the activity.
  3. Cooking can be a therapeutic experience.
    • “Cooking” takes the lead as the subject, emphasizing the therapeutic nature of the activity.

Por lógica y contexto esto no aplica a todos os adjetivos sino a los que mayormente describen sentimientos y actitudes de personas. A continuación les dejamos con una lista de adjetivos comunes que se les sigue el INFINITIVE:

Conclusion

Now you have learned the potential of using gerunds as subjects to infuse energy and dynamism into your language. Experiment with this versatile structure, and watch as your expressions come alive with the vivid actions conveyed by gerunds. Happy learning!
