If you’ve ever listened to native American English speakers and thought they were skipping letters—particularly the letter T—you’re not imagining it. Words like “mountain,” “Atlanta,” and “interview” often sound like they’re missing the T altogether.
In many cases, this is due to a phonological process called “T-elision” or the use of a glottal stop, especially when the T follows the letter N.
Why Does the T Disappear in American English?
In American English, when the sound /t/ comes right after the sound /n/, it often disappears in casual or fast speech. This is because it’s hard to pronounce /n/ and /t/ together quickly, so the T is dropped or replaced with a glottal stop (a little pause or “catch” in the throat: ʔ).
👉 It usually happens when T comes after N.
