My Experience with COVID
I take care of myself very well. I don’t go out much and if I do I always wear a mask (sometimes a double mask) when I go shopping, mainly for food, or go to the bank, I always use a hand sanitizer wherever I see one. I respect social distancing and wash my hands often and had never thought I would catch this virus. In Peru we are still in the middle of the pandemic. There are outbreaks here and there and the risk of infection is high especially when you go out where there are crowds.
This is where I made my biggest mistake. I got careless. I went to visit a friend and we were going to prepare lunch. I put my mask and went to the mall and market. I wore my mask but I don´t know how exactly I got the virus. Maybe it was in the bank and when I paid in cash for some meat. I have no idea. My friend was ok so I suppose that it was somewhere in the market.
By the fourth day (symptom day 1) I isolated myself in my room. I live with my extended family and was responsible and followed the guidelines. The next day I had a fever and a stomachache and diarrhea. Still, I didn´t think it was the virus. I took care of myself, right? I had a wet cough and usually COVID give you a dry cough. On Saturday I called a doctor and she came and thought it was bronchitis but she still ordered a test to check if it was COVID. Later that they a nurse came and told me “ I am going to swab your nose and the back of your throat with this cotton bud. I felt like I had the flu and was relaxed. The next morning I lost my sense of smell and taste and hours later received the confirmation. I tested positive for COVID.
Day 6 from the first symptoms things changed. I had a headache, continued with the fever, a cough, fatigue, chills and nausea. The nausea was the worst because it made all the other symptoms worsen. This continued for four days in which mentally I collapsed. I am divorced and thought about my children. Also, my lungs are weak because I had had a severe pnumonia incident years ago and I was terrified that at any moment I would get worse.
Day 11 was when finally my nausea stopped and I felt a bit better. However, I was very anxiuos and a bit depressed. I called everyone just to talk. I have been stressed before but preferred to be alone. This time I couldn’t stop calling friends and especially my family. I talked to my parents I think every hour. I just didn’t want to be alone. Every time I thought about my children I cried and cried. That lasted about four days. I was still in quarentine and finally came out of my room on day 21.
So, what was COVID for me? It was not easy. It was a struggle of uncertainty about the future. It is a mental struggle. However, it was a time to organize my priorities. It was a reconecction with my parents and many friends. My advice is for everyone who can avoid it please do that. Get the vaccine or please use a mask and follow the guidelines.
