Many students have asked me about the phrase “Gotta”. Today we are going to explain 4 uses of of the phrases “gotta” and “I got it”.

GOTTA en INGLES

GOTTA is an Informal way of saying I’ve got to

 

Gotta comes from “I’ve got to.” “I’ve got to leave now,” which is like “I have to leave now.” But we take off the “I’ve” and make it “I,” as kind of a colloquial contraction. So, “I gotta go now” is a common way. “I gotta read that book.”

More correct would be “I’ve got to” and the correct pronunciation would be “I’ve gotta” with this. “I’ve gotta read that book.”

  • I gotta take her to the airport.
  • I’ve gotta study for the test.
  • We gotta have lunch before we take the bus

*** Gotta es como decir I have to / I’ve got to que significa tengo que. Es decir, se usa para obligaciones.

I got it – I understand. We can say also I get it.

  • Oh I got it. Thanks for the explanation.

*** en este caso I got it significa lo entiendo o lo entendi.

I got it – I have the matter in hand

We can use I got to say I have it under control.

  • Do you need any help with that homework. No. I am ok. I got it.

*** Aca significa yo me encargo o lo tengo bajo control.

I got it – I have (Possession)

We can use I got to indicate possession

  • I got two brothers.
  • I got a dog.
  • She got a house.

*** Aca significa yo tengo y quiere indicar posesión
